In 1997, Indonesia was hit by an economic crisis which was followed by a crisis of legitimation of the New Order regime. This crisis was marked by riots and student mass demonstrations in various places that eventually shaked the whole network of the New Order structure which was built upon political centralism and market economy. The authoritarian New Order regime reached its point of destruction with the development of civil society in Indonesia.
